Sofia the First is an American computer-animated television series that incorporates characters from the Disney Princess franchise. On April 14, , the series was renewed for a fourth season by Disney Junior , which released on April 28, The series finale aired on September 8, The pilot movie introduces Sofia, the daughter of a shoe-shop owner named Miranda.
Both of them have been living happily together in the kingdom of Enchancia for as long as Sofia can remember. On a fateful day, her and her mother are called to the castle to help King Roland II for a shoe fitting, who soon marries her mother, crowning her Enchancia's new Queen and Sofia as its new princess. With the help of Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather from Walt Disney 's Sleeping Beauty , now headmistresses at a school for royalty known as Royal Preparatory Academy, Sofia tries to adjust to royal life.
She is also gifted a beautiful purple amulet as a welcoming gift, soon realising that it is in fact the power of the Amulet of Avalor that grants her magical powers, such as the ability to talk to and understand animals. However, this amulet is coveted by the kingdom's royal sorcerer Cedric, who wants to use its power to take over Enchancia.
Combined with the stresses of royal life and fitting in to a new school, Sofia has to deal with her jealous stepsister Amber, who feels that her father loves Sofia over her.
King Roland soon announces a welcoming ball for Sofia, where she has to dance in front of everyone. Sofia has no clue about Cedric's evil plans and consider him a good friend, borrowing a spell from him to make her look like a good dancer after missing out a dance class thanks to Amber.
The truth is that the "dancing spell" is actually one enforced to make everyone in the ballroom fall asleep, and that is when Cedric will trade the antidote for the amulet with Sofia.
Before the ball, Amber accidentally rips her dress, and stays in her room due to her embarrassment and her brother James berating her for her schemes. During the ball, all the guests at the ball and the royal family present excluding Sofia and Amber fall asleep, including Cedric.
The Amulet of Avalor summons Cinderella to give Sofia the courage to step forward and resolve matters with Amber, who teaches her how to dance. The two girls infiltrate Cedric's tower and find the counter-spell after Sofia sews up Amber's dress for her. Waking up everyone, Sofia dances proudly at her ball, as her new father anoints her the title of Princess Sofia the First.
Getting introduced to royal life includes getting introduced to the kingdom's royal horses, which unlike normal horses, possess wings for flight. After seeing a flying derby race where players ride on flying horses and race to the finish line, Sofia decides to try out for Royal Prep's flying derby team, much to the amusement of her brother James and the other boys there. Sofia's sister Amber, her princess friends, and the boys on the team insist that flying derby isn't a "princess thing", but Sofia is determined to become the first princess on the team.
At the stables, she befriends a mini purple horse named Minimus, who is looked down upon due to his small size and lack of wing power. Working together as a team, Sofia trains hard and ultimately manages to win a flying derby race, including beating Hugo, the best rider at Royal Prep, proving that anything can be a "princess thing".
Guest star : Eric Stonestreet as Minimus. When Amber invites her two princess best friends Hildegard and Cleo for a sleepover at the Enchancia castle, this prompts Sofia, who is invited, to bring along her two best friends from the village, Ruby and Jade.
Amber and her friends discourage Sofia from playing with them at the sleepover due to their wild and crazy ways and over-excitement from being in the castle, and Sofia, in an attempt to appease her princess friends, tries to make Ruby and Jade change their ways. This backfires as Ruby and Jade feel that Sofia isn't accepting them for who they are, causing them to leave the castle in anger.
While this comes as good news to the princesses, Sofia chases after them and they reconcile at the castle gates after some encouragement from Miranda, Sofia's village mother. As the three girls play in Sofia's room instead, the three princesses realise that things are boring without Ruby, Jade and Sofia, and apologise for their haughty behaviour, joining in the fun. Together, they have a perfect slumber party. Meanwhile, Cedric finds a perfect opportunity to swipe Sofia's amulet during a puppet show he has been forced to put on for the children, but it fails when Ruby and Jade upset a chocolate fountain and ruin the show, along with Cedric's plans.
While playing with her kite with Amber and James, Sofia drops hers by an ominous cave, which is said to house vicious green trolls that live there. Sofia glimpses one just as she tries to pick up her ripped kite, leaving it behind in fright. When she inquires about the trolls during dinner, James tells the story of how the troll community infiltrated the castle a long time ago, banging their clubs, so the soldiers chased them back to their cave.
Present-day rule decrees that trolls must stay forever in their cave while humans stay up on land, but Sofia decides to go see for herself after her kite makes it back to her, and fixed too. There, she befriends the troll who returned her kite, Narly, and a toddler troll named Teeny.
They explain that on that night, the trolls had simply emerged up on land to admire the stars, and the banging of the clubs which was believed to be attack on the castle was actually their way of making music when they are happy.
Understanding now, Sofia returns to the castle and convinces them to sneak into the castle as acrobats to play their music, thinking that it will make her father see the truth. As the trolls are chased out of the castle, Sofia ventures out to their cave to apologise, only to come across her father, who followed her.
After both of them are rescued from a chasm by the trolls, King Roland understands the truth and listens to his daughter, removing the law and allowing the trolls to go up to the surface to see the stars. In need of practice for her upcoming sorcery test, Sofia volunteers to be an apprentice for Cedric, hoping to learn sufficient magic from him to pass it, in return for helping him tidy up his messy workshop. However, Cedric sees it as an opportunity to steal her amulet instead, planning to use an invisibility potion to swipe it when she comes back tomorrow.
However, Cedric's mother and father overhear his plans and take up opposing sides; his mother insists that Cedric use this rare opportunity while his father advises him that "a sorcerer's place is by the king's side, not on his throne", leaving Cedric incredibly conflicted on what to do. His invisibility potion eventually fails, forcing him to actually teach Sofia how to do the spells required for her test. When he fails at impressing King Roland by messing up one of his spells, he manages to change Sofia back into human form after she accidentally knocks over a potion that turns her into a lizard.
Knowing that this will surely clear everyone's doubts about his ability, Cedric confides in the princess about how King Roland's presence makes him nervous and messes up his spells. Sofia resolves to help Cedric because he is her friend, in addition to helping him fix his failed invisibility potion. When King Magnus of the neighbouring kingdom comes to visit, he brags continuously about his kingdom's greatness much to Roland's chagrin.
Sofia arranges for Cedric to put on a magic show to impress King Magnus and her family on the night after tomorrow, which is the same day as her test. Sofia passes with flying colours and thanks Cedric, who ultimately decides to steal the amulet. When Cedric messes up, she purposely turns herself into a lizard, prompting the former to save Sofia and impressing everyone. At the turning point, Cedric decides not to go through with his plans after all, knowing how sad it would make his new princess friend.
Sofia presents a gold-star certificate to him after getting one in her sorcery test. When the Golden Wing Circus arrives on its annual basis, James is determined to go after practising a juggling trick which he had perfected recently despite his father telling him not to practise it in the castle for fear of breaking anything.
After a stained glass window depicting their family finishes construction, Roland prepares to surprise Miranda with it, just as James starts juggling again, breaking Amber's face off the window.
Afraid that he will be punished by being grounded from going, Amber tries to distract their parents while Sofia and James block the crack with a suit of armour, only for its spear to fall and crack the entire window, much to their horror. The two of them try to find Cedric to use magic to fix the window, who uses this as an opportunity to steal Sofia's amulet using a summoning spell, but it backfires and he gets pulled into the window instead.
Although an attempted spell frees Cedric, the whole window breaks off, and Amber is unable to stall their parents any longer. In the end, Sofia lies that she was the one who broke the window instead, knowing that she had never seen the circus before and that's why she wouldn't miss it, allowing James and Amber to go to the Golden Wing Circus and have a good time. James, ridden with guilt, finally admits to his parents his deed, as well as Amber's involvement in it, leading the whole family to return to the castle.
The King and Queen teach their children on always telling the truth. After an apology from all the children, the circus master brings the circus to the castle and perform for the children, much to their delight. When students are paired up for a class art project that involves building your own dream castle, Sofia is paired up with the shy and quiet princess Vivian.
Going to Vivian's castle to work together introduces her to Vivian's friendly pet dragon Crackle who takes an immediate liking to Clover, Sofia's bunny friend whom she brought along. Although Vivian eventually opens up to Sofia and confides in the latter about her shyness when talking to new people, Sofia notices the former's shyness disappear completely when Vivian plays the mandolin and sings. As the day of show-and-tell draws near, Sofia determines to help Vivian overcome her shyness by presenting together with her, in the form of music.
With a few desperate tries and Sofia's encouragement, Vivian works up the courage to actually talk to others, who don't know who she is resulting in many nasty rumours about her. Her sudden cheerfulness and lovely voice during the presentation prompts the other royal students to also step up and make friends with her.
In the end, Vivian thanks Sofia for being her very first friend and joins the school band. Sofia, Amber and James decide to enter their respective pets in the Dunwiddie Village Fair's pet contest, where the winning pet will receive a blue ribbon and the owner and pet will ride in the village parade together.
James enters his pet baboon Freedo, Amber enters her pet peacock Praline, Hildegard enters her white weasel Lulu, Vivian enters Crackle, and Sofia, prompted by her longing for the reward, enters Clover.
Amber, noting Clover's lack of "talent", introduces Sofia to the kingdom's finest bunny, a beautiful white rabbit named Ginger, who can whistle. She ultimately decides to take Ginger instead, which hurts Clover's feelings and self-esteem. After a confrontation from Crackle and overhearing a village boy take his dog to the contest simply because his pet is his friend, Sofia rushes back to the castle, bringing Clover to the contest instead and apologising for her behaviour.
Entering last-minute, Clover shows off his dance moves and agility as he catches blueberries thrown into the air by Sofia a game they used to play together as best friends. In the end, the two are proclaimed the winner and ride together in the village parade.
When Flora, Fauna and Merriwether announce an upcoming princess test which tests the girls on everything they know about being a princess, Sofia, accompanied by Jun, Hildegard and Amber, go to the library to study, where they consult the librarian Mrs.
Hildegard, Amber and Jun tell Sofia that the most important parts of being a princess are her gown, fan, curtsey, and dancing, and that the rest of princess etiquette is just too exhaustive to learn within one day. On the way to the test, Mrs. Higgins attempts to ask the princesses passing by for help, but most ignore her or apologise before rushing off. Sofia on the other hand, agrees to help Mrs. Higgins carry her books to her house when her wheelbarrow broke down.
When the bridge across the river breaks, the two are forced to go by another, longer way, which causes Sofia's dress to get dirty in the mud and her fan to get drifted off into the stream. Meanwhile, Hildegard is having panic attacks at the princess test, but manages to get back into her spirit with Amber's help. Finally reaching Mrs. Higgins' cottage, magic transports Sofia to the venue of the princess test and reveals the Mrs.
Higgins she had been helping to be Fauna in disguise. Sofia is awarded full marks for her test, as an important part of being a princess is helping others in need. Baileywick, the castle steward, is known for constantly quietly working away, performing his duties impeccably. However, King Roland decides to give Baileywick the day off on his birthday to spend the day with his elder brother Nigel, complete with fun activities like fishing, apple-picking, and eating ice-cream.
As he prepares to leave the castle, Sofia, Amber and James arrange a playdate with their friends Zandar, Hildegard, Ruby and Jade, participating in fun activities that cater to each and every one of their own interests.
While playing pirate on James' treehouse, the mast of the ship breaks, and Baileywick returns per James' calling to fix it up, missing his ride to the apple orchard.
During Amber's pink tea-party, Baileywick is called back to re-ice the cookies to Amber's taste. He also has to help catch butterflies for Sofia's painting activity.
By the end of the day, Baileywick did not get to enjoy a single hour of his day off, much to the children's guilt. After their friends leave, Sofia, Amber, James and Nigel try to redo the whole day by setting up all the planned activities again. It's time for the annual Tri-Kingdom Picnic between the kingdoms of Enchancia, Wei-Ling and Khaldune, where the children and their parents compete separately against one another in games, with the winning team getting the Golden Chalice trophy.
James really wants to win the games, and partners with Sofia when Amber decides to drop out with Princess Lina of Khaldune to paint their parasols. Unfortunately, James' bad sportsmanship makes it hard to have fun, being both a sore winner and a sore loser, making everyone quit eventually.
